INDIANA — As white-tailed deer hunting activity ramps up across Indiana, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Fish & Wildlife is offering a free online workshop to help hunters prepare for the upcoming firearms season.
The live webinar, titled “Preparing For The Hunt,” is scheduled for Thursday, October 8, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. ET. The instructional session is open to hunters of all ages and experience levels, ranging from novices planning their first outing to seasoned hunters seeking to refine their scouting techniques.
What the Webinar Covers
Led by DNR wildlife biologists and hunting coordinators, the educational session will focus on practical, pre-season scouting techniques to maximize field success and promote safety:
- Field Scouting Strategies: How to identify active feeding areas, bedding sites, and high-traffic travel corridors.
- Property Access: Tips and legal considerations for navigating public Fish & Wildlife Areas (FWAs) versus securing access to private land.
- Gear and Safety Preparation: Gear checks, tree stand safety, and regulatory reminders before entering the field.

Essential Regulations for the Firearms Opener
Hunters preparing for the primary 16-day firearms window opening November 14 must adhere to state safety laws and reporting requirements:
- Blaze Orange Requirement: Hunters—as well as anyone accompanying them—must wear a solid hunter orange vest, coat, coveralls, hat, or cap visible from all directions during firearms and muzzleloader seasons.
- Harvest Reporting: All harvested deer must be checked within 48 hours of harvest using the state’s CheckIN Game online system, the Indiana DNR app, or at an official check station.
- Licensing: Resident and non-resident licenses, along with proper state identification, can be purchased via Access Indiana or at authorized local retailers.
