FRENCH LICK — Orange County is stepping into the national spotlight this summer with a grand, multi-week itinerary of events commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. Under the banner “Timeless French Lick, Indiana: America 250 Orange County,” regional organizers have finalized an expansive schedule that spans until early July, promising historic exhibits, community gatherings, concerts, and dazzling multimedia spectacles across the entire county.

The semi-quincentennial celebrations highlight not only the birth of the nation but also the deep historical footprint of Southern Indiana. Municipalities including French Lick, West Baden Springs, Orleans, and Paoli have synchronized their efforts to offer residents and visitors an unforgettable journey through American history, utilizing local landmarks, natural parks, and premier resort destinations.
Cultural Foundations and Early June Commemorations
The festivities officially commenced with the opening of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution exhibit, “Voices & Votes,” hosted at the Visitors Center in West Baden. Running through June 28, the exhibit offers an immersive exploration of the American democratic experiment. It is accessible to the public weekly, operating Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from Noon to 5:00 p.m.

Following the exhibit’s launch, historical dedication took center stage on June 6 at the French Lick Resort, where a formal rededication ceremony was held for the French Lick Fort Historic Marker. The focus shifts back to the West Baden Visitors Center on June 15 for the highly anticipated America 250 Lantern Relay, a symbolic event honoring the enduring flame of American liberty.

As mid-June approaches, the spotlight moves north to Orleans. On June 18 at 6:30 p.m., the historic Orleans Congress Square will host the “250th Birthday Concert,” featuring a highly anticipated patriotic performance by the acclaimed musical group Ladies for Liberty. Shortly thereafter, on June 26 and 27, the French Lick Town Green will transform into the vibrant epicenter of “Summer Fest: America 250 Celebration,” starting daily at 9:00 a.m.
An Explosive Independence Week Agenda
The celebration reaches its peak during the traditional Independence Day period, kicking off on July 3 in Orleans with a classic Ice Cream Social & Entertainment gathering. The excitement intensifies that evening in French Lick, where the French Lick Springs Hotel will host a “First & Main Performance” from 8:30 p.m. to 10:10 p.m., culminating in a state-of-the-art Drone Show over the French Lick Casino at 10:00 p.m.

July 4th promises an action-packed itinerary across multiple townships. Morning commemorations begin at 10:00 a.m. on the Paoli Courthouse Square, featuring a poignant ceremony that includes the opening of a 1976 Time Capsule, a Revolutionary War Memorial Rededication, and a ceremonial Liberty Tree Planting. In the evening, live entertainment returns to the French Lick Springs Hotel with a concert by the Southern Accents Tribute Band from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Independence Day will conclude with a series of synchronized fireworks displays across the county sky. Pyrotechnic shows are scheduled at Patoka Lake (“Thunder Over Patoka” from 8:45 p.m. to 10:10 p.m.), the French Lick Casino (10:00 p.m.), and at dusk at both the Paoli community grounds and the Orleans Airport.
Reflection and Proclamation

Following the high-energy celebrations of July 4th, organizers have designated July 5 as “America’s Day of Reflection,” a county-wide opportunity for citizens to contemplate the nation’s historical journey and future trajectory. The multi-week celebration will formally conclude on July 8 at the Paoli Courthouse Steps with the reading of the 250th Proclamation of the Declaration of Independence, finalizing a historic milestone for the Southern Indiana community.
