Broadway musical ‘Waitress’ coming to IU Auditorium

BLOOMINGTON — A beloved Broadway musical filled with humor, heart, friendship and plenty of pie is coming to the IU Auditorium as “Waitress” takes the stage for local audiences.

Based on the 2007 film of the same name, Waitress follows Jenna, a talented waitress and expert pie maker who dreams of escaping her small town and an unhappy marriage. She pours her emotions into the pies she creates, giving each dessert a personality of its own.

Jenna’s life begins to change when she discovers a baking contest in a nearby county that could give her the opportunity for a fresh start. Along the way, a new relationship and the support of those around her force Jenna to consider what she truly wants from life.

At its heart, Waitress is a story about finding the courage to make your own choices and create a life that feels right for you. The musical explores friendship, love, motherhood, resilience and the importance of believing that change is possible.

The production features an acclaimed creative team. Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, known for hits including “Brave” and “Love Song,” wrote the show’s original music and lyrics. The book was written by screenwriter Jessie Nelson, known for I Am Sam, while Lorin Latarro created the choreography and Tony Award winner Diane Paulus directed the production.

Since its Broadway debut, Waitress has earned praise for its combination of catchy music, comedy and an uplifting story.

Entertainment Weekly called the musical “a little slice of heaven,” while New York Magazine described it as “sweet, sassy and passionate.” The Chicago Tribune praised it as “an empowering musical of the highest order.”

For IU Auditorium audiences, the show promises an entertaining night filled with music, laughter and a story about discovering the strength to change your circumstances.

Whether you’re already a fan of Sara Bareilles, love Broadway musicals or simply enjoy a good story with a little humor and a lot of heart, Waitress offers something for everyone.

“Waitress” is coming to IU Auditorium in Bloomington on September 29 and 30, with both shows starting at 7:30 p.m. Audiences can follow Jenna’s journey as she discovers that sometimes the recipe for happiness requires taking a chance, finding your voice and writing your own story.
