The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed that multiple properties will host major lakeside celebrations on Saturday, July 4, 2026, offering a mix of beachside activities, live entertainment, and premium pyrotechnics.

Families planning their holiday weekend can catch major shows at the following state-regulated recreation areas:

Thunder Over Patoka Lake (Newton Stewart SRA)

Marking its 22nd year, Thunder Over Patoka stands as southern Indiana’s premier lake-beach fireworks celebration. Organized by Patoka Lake Area Year-round (PLAY), this year’s event features a 50% budget increase to deliver a much larger display in honor of America’s 250th anniversary.

  • The Event: The swim beach opens at 6:30 p.m. for beachside crafts and family activities. The premium, professional fireworks will launch at dark (approximately 10:00 p.m.) over the water.
  • Where to Watch: Spectators can view the show from Patoka Beach, from boats on the 8,800-acre reservoir, or from nearby boat ramps. Campers staying at the property can also head to Section C of the Modern Campground for an excellent, dedicated viewing area.
  • Details: Park entry is $7 for vehicles with Indiana license plates ($15 for out-of-state vehicles). Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray, and can tune their radios to WITZ-FM 104.7 for live, choreographed music during the display.

Fireworks on Lake James (Pokagon State Park)

Up in extreme northeast Indiana, Pokagon State Park offers one of the state’s most historic and atmospheric settings.

  • The Event: Presented by the Lakes Recreation Association, the fireworks will be launched from a barge anchored on Lake James’ first basin. The display begins at dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m.).
  • Where to Watch: Spectators are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to the lawn of the historic Potawatomi Inn. The show is also completely visible from boats on the water.
  • Details: Standard park gate entrance fees apply. A park shuttle will run throughout the evening between the inn and outlying parking lots. Park officials explicitly recommend that visitors bring a flashlight for the walk back to their vehicles after the show.

Fireworks at Cecil M. Harden Lake (Raccoon SRA)

Located in Parke County, Raccoon State Recreation Area will utilize the wide, open waters of Cecil M. Harden Lake to host its annual multi-colored sky show. Visitors can spend the afternoon utilizing the park’s extensive boat ramps, swimming beach, and hiking trails before anchoring or setting up blankets along the shoreline for the pyrotechnics display, which will launch at dark.

Extended Weekend Bonus: Versailles State Park (July 5)

For families looking to extend their holiday or avoid heavy peak-holiday traffic, Versailles State Park in southeastern Indiana will host its fireworks display on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

  • The Event: Shimmering over the park’s 230-acre lake, the fireworks are scheduled to launch at dusk. To build up to the big show, a Kona Ice truck will be stationed on-site from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Details: In an effort to welcome the community, the Indiana DNR has confirmed that park admission will be completely FREE between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., leading directly up to the show.

DNR Advisory: Visitors heading to any state park for fireworks are strongly urged to arrive early in the afternoon. High vehicle volume routinely causes parking lots to fill hours before dusk, which can result in temporary gate closures for incoming traffic.
