Dominance and First-Time Glory: Black Key Bulls and Alpha Chi Omega triumph at Little 500

BLOOMINGTON Bill Armstrong Stadium was a whirlwind of speed, strategy, and high-stakes drama this past weekend as Indiana University hosted the 2026 Little 500 races. The weekend was defined by two historic outcomes: a relentless “three-peat” in the men’s division and a breakthrough first-time victory in the women’s race.

For the third year in a row, the Black Key Bulls proved why they are the current gold standard of Little 500 cycling. The team secured its third consecutive title, a feat that cements its place among the legendary programs in the race’s history.

The race was a tactical battle from the start, with the Bulls facing stiff competition from perennial contenders Cinzano and Bears Cycling. However, the climax of the 200-lap event was marred by chaos.

On lap 199—just one lap shy of the finish line—a significant crash occurred, forcing the officials to wave the yellow flag. Because the field was frozen under caution, the Black Key Bulls crossed the line to finalize their victory, followed by Cinzano in second and Bears Cycling in third.

Women’s Race: A Historic First for Alpha Chi Omega

The 38th running of the Women’s Little 500 provided a historic “first” for the Bloomington community. Alpha Chi Omega captured its first-ever title in school history, breaking through after years of dedicated training.

Race Weekend Highlights

The 2026 races saw a massive turnout at Bill Armstrong Stadium, benefiting from clear weather and a high-energy atmosphere.

Known as “The World’s Greatest College Weekend,” the Little 500 continues to serve as the largest intramural event at Indiana University, raising funds for student scholarships.

From the “Cream and Crimson” sections to the dedicated alumni tents, the 2026 event saw a peak in student attendance, marking a full return to the pre-pandemic vibrancy of the stadium.

While the men’s race ended under caution, officials noted that safety protocols were executed swiftly to attend to the riders involved in the lap 199 pile-up.

As the Black Key Bulls begin their look toward a potential fourth title and Alpha Chi Omega celebrates their inaugural win, the focus of the IU cycling community now shifts toward the 2027 qualifying series.
