BLOOMINGTON – As severe weather season approaches, the Monroe County Central Emergency Dispatch Center is reminding residents to take steps now to stay safe during storms and to understand the critical role 911 plays in emergencies.

Severe storms can develop quickly, bringing high winds, lightning, heavy rain, flooding, and possible tornadoes. Preparing in advance can make a life-saving difference.
Be storm-ready
Residents are encouraged to:
- Monitor local weather forecasts and alerts.
- Have multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather radios and mobile alerts.
- Sign up for alerts through the Monroe County, Indiana Everbridge alert notification system.
- Identify a safe shelter location in your home, such as a basement or an interior room away from windows.
- Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies.
- Create a family communication plan in the event you are separated during a storm.
Flood Safety While Driving
Heavy rain can quickly lead to flooded roadways. The community is urged to remember the following: Turn around, don’t drown.
- Never drive through standing or moving water.
- A small amount of water can cause a vehicle to lose control or be swept away.
- Flooded roads may be deeper or more damaged than they appear.
When to Call 911
911 is for emergencies where immediate assistance from police, fire, or medical personnel is
needed.
Examples include:
- Injuries or medical emergencies
- Fires or smoke
- Severe storm damage posing an immediate danger
- Downed power lines creating hazards
- Life-threatening situations
When Not to Call 911
The community should avoid calling 911 for the following:
- Weather updates
- Power outages (contact your utility provider)
- Road condition updates
- Non-urgent situations

- Answer emergency calls 24/7
- Quickly assess situations and prioritize responses
- Provide life-saving instructions, such as CPR guidance, until responders arrive
- Coordinate police, fire, and EMS resources
