Indiana gas prices edge higher as national average surpasses $4.00 mark

INDIANA Hoosier motorists are feeling a slight pinch at the pump this week as average gasoline prices in Indiana rose 2.5 cents per gallon over the last seven days. According to the latest GasBuddy survey of 3,271 stations across the state, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded now stands at $3.78.

While prices have ticked up recently, Indiana drivers are still seeing some relief compared to last month, with current averages sitting 25.7 cents lower than they were thirty days ago. However, the long-term trend remains steep: today’s prices are 72.9 cents higher than this time last year.

The State of the State: Highs and Lows

The Indiana market continues to show significant price volatility between stations. According to GasBuddy reports from yesterday, the spread between the most and least expensive fuel in the state reached nearly $1.50.

  • Lowest Price Recorded: $3.12/g
  • Highest Price Recorded: $4.59/g
  • Price Gap: $1.47/g

Locally, the trends are mixed. While Indianapolis saw a welcome decline of 9.5 cents to $3.61/g, nearby Cincinnati experienced a sharp spike of 18.3 cents, bringing its average to $3.83/g.

Nationally, the story is more aggressive. The U.S. average for gasoline climbed 7.0 cents in the last week to $4.04/g. This marks a nearly 95-cent increase compared to one year ago.

Interestingly, diesel fuel is currently moving in the opposite direction. The national average for diesel dropped 9.2 cents this week, landing at $5.408 per gallon. However, experts warn this “divergence” likely won’t last.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“Oil prices have been climbing again as markets react to renewed geopolitical tensions and the cancellation of talks between the U.S. and Iran,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “As a result, gasoline prices are set to rise further this week, with diesel expected to follow.”

Historical Context: April 27 Comparison

Current prices remain well above the historical norms of the last five years, except for the 2022 price surge.

April 27, 2026$3.78/g$4.04/g
April 27, 2025$3.05/g$3.10/g
April 27, 2024$3.57/g$3.65/g
April 27, 2023$3.55/g$3.61/g
April 27, 2022$4.01/g$4.14/g
April 27, 2021$2.79/g$2.88/g

De Haan warns that motorists in the Great Lakes region should prepare for more turbulence. Due to “price-cycling” market behaviors and rising crude costs, several inland states could soon see their highest averages since 2022. For now, the best advice for Indiana drivers is to shop around, as the massive $1.47 spread between stations proves that localized savings are still possible.
