Democrats “Kickoff to the Midterms” on Thursday night

BEDFORD – Over a hundred Lawrence County Democrats celebrated the “Kickoff to the Midterms” in Bedford Thursday night, April 23. The evening included a dinner and addresses by former Judge Michael Robbins and three candidates, Brad Meyer and Keil Roark, both vying for the Democratic nomination to represent Indiana’s 9th District in Congress, and Sean Steele, an independent candidate to represent House District 65 in the Indiana Legislature.

This large banner greeted Democrats as they arrived at the “Kickoff to the Midterms” Thursday night.

In his keynote speech, Judge Robbins encouraged Democrats to focus on the issues that affect ordinary people and to ensure that the poor and disenfranchised have access to economic prosperity and justice.

Brad Meyer’s motto is “Building a future with Universal Healthcare, an affordable life, and a return to the Constitution.” Meyer, a Navy engineer, wants to return America to the “Land of Opportunity” that it once was. Keil Roark, an automotive engineer and former Naval officer,  stressed his strong union roots and his desire to create “jobs, jobs, jobs.”

Bedford native Sean Steele, a public school art teacher who initially trained as a lawyer, emphasized his commitment to public schools, criticizing the school voucher program for putting tax dollars into the pockets of the wealthy and taking those same dollars away from public school budgets. Steele concluded his program by saying, “It’s not left vs. right, it’s right vs. wrong,” a sentiment everyone in the room appeared to share.
