Orleans prepares for 56th Annual Dogwood Festival and upcoming Smithsonian exhibit

ORLEANS The streets of downtown Orleans are sporting a fresh look this week as town employees finalize preparations for the 56th Annual Dogwood Festival. The beloved local tradition is set to kick off this weekend, bringing a wave of celebration and patriotic pride to Orange County.

Street crews have been busy installing brand-new banners on the historic period lamps throughout the downtown area. These banners are not just decorations; they are a collaboration between the community and local youth, having been designed by Orleans High School Advanced Art Students.

“Celebrating America 250”

This year’s festival carries the ambitious theme of “Celebrating America 250,” a nod to the upcoming semiquincentennial of the United States. The student-designed banners reflect this patriotic spirit, setting the stage for a week of parades, carnival rides, and community gatherings that honor both local heritage and national history.

The Dogwood Festival has long served as the unofficial start of spring for the region, drawing thousands of visitors to see the town’s namesake trees in bloom and participate in the community festivities.

A Sneak Peek at “Voices & Votes”

In addition to festival promotion, several of the new street banners are directing visitors toward a major cultural event arriving in Orange County next month. Orleans is helping to build anticipation for the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit, “Voices & Votes: Democracy in America.”

The exhibit is part of a prestigious national tour and will provide a deep dive into the history of American democracy, from the perspectives of the people who shaped it.

The arrival of a Smithsonian exhibit is considered a significant milestone for Orange County’s tourism and educational sectors. Residents and festival-goers are encouraged to take note of the banners for more information on how to visit the exhibit once it opens in nearby French Lick.

As the Dogwood Festival begins this weekend, town officials are reminding motorists to be mindful of increased pedestrian traffic downtown and to enjoy the student artwork adorning the historic lamps.
