Delicious food at Lions Club Fall Flapjack Feast

BEDFORD – This morning, from 6 a.m. until 12 p.m., the Lions Club Chapters from Bedford, Mitchell, and Fayetteville came together to provide a delicious breakfast for the community. The funds raised will go towards the Lion’s Club community projects.

Newell Clifton, Barry Strong, Mike Berry, and Dan Chambers are members of the Lion’s Club.

The Mitchell chapter restored its charter in 2006 after it was given up years earlier, likely due to a lack of members.

Today, the club has just over 20 members, up from 14 last year. Dan informed WBIW that the Mitchell chapter contributes clothing to Burris and Hatfield Elementary schools for children who have accidents or are just in need. They also contribute to the food drive for the L.I.F.E. Food Pantry and support the Lawrence County Patient Services Car Show.

Jan and her husband Don Allen are both part of the Lions Club after their son won an international violin competition for the Lion’s Club. The whole family was invited to join the club.

Jan Allen was the first female member of the Bedford Lion’s Club, and the club had to take a vote on integrating women. “It’s a good thing they did,” Jan said “Because the club is almost half women now.

Lions Club members make sausages and pancakes.

Every side of the pavilion was lined with those eager for flapjacks or those busy providing them. Many came out to support the club and enjoy a warm, filling breakfast that they didn’t have to make themselves.

The Thornton Park pavilion parking lot was full before daylight broke with a constant stream of flapjack-seekers.

The funds raised from the Fall Flapjack Feast will go to support the Lions Club in their endeavors. Those missions include projects like building ramps for wheelchair access or providing free vision scans to support school nurses who are required to check student eyesight.

The retina scans can catch deteriorating eyesight in children before they’re old enough to distinguish letters for the average eye test.

The Lion’s Club Fall Flapjack Feast is a beloved annual fundraiser.
