SEYMOUR — Families looking to enjoy the outdoors can participate in a day of free fishing, family competition, and hands-on activities as the annual “Take A Kid Fishing Day” returns to the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Hosted by the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society, the event runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the refuge, located on U.S. 50 east of Seymour. The gathering aligns with Indiana’s Fall Free Fishing Day, meaning state residents can fish public waters without purchasing a fishing license or trout/salmon stamp.
Fishing Contests and Family Activities
The showcase event features a fishing competition at Discovery Pond for participants ages 15 and under. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to young anglers who catch the biggest fish.
For families without equipment, free live bait will be supplied on site, and fishing poles will be available to borrow.
Additional activities scheduled throughout the morning include:
- Casting Contest: Held at the Refuge Visitor Center with additional prizes up for grabs.
- Gear Giveaways: Children can enter a raffle to win a brand-new fishing pole.
- Crafts & Recreation: Fish-themed craft stations designed for younger attendees.
- Free Lunch: A complimentary grilled hot dog lunch will be provided for all attendees.
Promoting Outdoor Recreation
Organizers emphasize that the event is tailored for both experienced young anglers and first-time fishers.
The refuge, established in 1966 to preserve wetland habitats for waterfowl and wildlife, encompasses over 7,700 acres in Jackson and Jennings counties. Events like Take A Kid Fishing Day aim to encourage local families to explore public lands and engage with native wildlife habitats.
Following Saturday’s event, the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society will host its next seasonal gathering, the annual Log Cabin Day festival, on Saturday, Oct. 10.
