Bloomington’s 12th Annual Bug Fest returns to Karst Farm Park; Volunteers needed

BLOOMINGTON Insect enthusiasts and families across the region can prepare for a day of environmental education and interactive fun as Bloomington hosts its 12th annual Bug Fest on Saturday, September 26, at Karst Farm Park from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The annual community event aims to showcase the fascinating world of insects while promoting environmental stewardship. Local experts will be on-site throughout the day to display specimens, host educational exhibits, and answer questions on a wide variety of insect-related topics.

Bug Fest features a broad lineup of family-friendly activities designed to engage visitors of all ages, including:

  • Interactive Exhibits: Displays hosted by regional entomologists and environmental specialists.
  • Hands-on Crafts & Games: Bug-themed crafts, educational games, and tailored activity areas for toddlers.
  • Community Engagement: Opportunities to learn about local ecosystems and the crucial roles insects play in biodiversity and plant pollination.

Organizers are actively seeking community volunteers to assist with event operations, which draw more than 1,000 local youth and family members each year.

Volunteers can sign up for two available shifts on Sept. 26:

  • Morning Shift: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Afternoon Shift: 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Volunteer roles include running craft stations, facilitating games, assisting with toddler activities, and helping manage event logistics.

Qualifying Volunteer Hours: Participation in Bug Fest serves as an approved volunteer opportunity for individuals needing to fulfill service hour requirements, including:

  • National Honor Society (NHS) hours
  • Master Gardener community service credits
  • Greek life philanthropic hours
  • High school and college academic scholarship service requirements
