BLOOMINGTON — Most families spend months deciding what to do with a loved one’s belongings after they are gone. The Griffin family made a different decision.
Instead of quietly packing away the dresses, handbags, shoes and jewelry that once belonged to their beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Marlene McGuire Griffin, the family chose to give those treasured pieces a new purpose.
On August 1, the day that would have marked Marlene and her husband Donald’s 56th wedding anniversary—they will invite the community to shop her carefully curated wardrobe during Marlene’s Pretty Things~A Day of Style, Giving & Grace, a one-of-a-kind boutique pop-up shopping experience born from a family’s deeply personal journey through cancer and Lupus.
For the Griffin family, every garment tells a story. Every outfit carries a memory. Every purchase reflects resilience, love, and a determination to turn pain into purpose. What began as loss has become an extraordinary response—one family’s way of transforming generations of illness into hope for others.

Cancer and Lupus have shaped the Griffin family’s life for decades. Marlene courageously battled breast cancer multiple times before ultimately losing her life to metastatic breast cancer in 2025. Alongside that fight, she also lived with Lupus, facing each challenge with remarkable faith, strength, and compassion.
Her eldest daughter, Marshella Griffin, has also faced both breast cancer and Lupus, giving the family an intimate understanding of the physical, emotional, and financial toll these diseases take—not just on individuals, but on entire families. These shared experiences have created a powerful bond and an unwavering commitment to ensure that others facing similar battles feel seen, supported, and not alone.
Marlene was known throughout the Bloomington community for her warmth, compassion, unwavering faith, and generous spirit. Giving back was not just something she believed in—it was something she lived every day. Whether supporting families in need, encouraging those facing illness, or extending kindness to strangers, she made it her mission to uplift others.
Marlene retired from Indiana University after years of serving students and the campus community. She was known for her warm spirit, generous heart, and ability to make people feel at home. Many who knew her described her as a second mother—someone who welcomed people with kindness, encouragement, and genuine care. Her impact extended far beyond the university and into churches, neighborhoods, friendships and countless lives throughout Bloomington. Following her passing, her husband, three children, their spouses and her grandchildren began asking themselves one question:
How do we respond to everything our family has endured—and honor the woman who carried us through it?
Their answer became The Marlene Griffin Legacy Fund and its signature community event, Marlene’s Pretty Things.
Rather than hosting a traditional memorial fundraiser, the family is transforming Marlene’s personal wardrobe into a unique Pop-Up boutique shopping experience where guests can take home a meaningful piece of her story while becoming part of a larger mission rooted in compassion, resilience, and healing.
Net proceeds from the event will support organizations aligned with the family’s lived experience, including:

- Stand Up To Cancer
- St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
- Wounded Warrior Project
These organizations reflect the realities the Griffin family has faced—supporting those battling cancer and autoimmune disease, helping children facing life-threatening illnesses, and honoring individuals who have endured profound physical and emotional challenges.
Beyond fundraising, the event is a testament to what can happen when a family chooses purpose over grief. It celebrates resilience, unity, and the belief that even in the face of generational illness, love can create something lasting and meaningful.
Guests will experience a thoughtfully curated boutique filled with Marlene’s clothing, handbags, shoes, jewelry and accessories, beautifully displayed in a warm, welcoming atmosphere that reflects her timeless style and gracious spirit.
The event also reflects the power of a family working together. Three generations of the Griffin family—along with friends, volunteers, local businesses and community partners—have united to create an experience that honors Marlene while offering strength and encouragement to others facing similar battles.
