Indiana gas prices plummet 22 cents to $3.42 per gallon as refineries ramp up

INDIANA — Hoosier drivers are finding significant relief at the pump this week as average gasoline prices in Indiana plummeted 22.8 cents per gallon over the last seven days, landing at an average of $3.42 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy’s weekly survey of 3,271 stations across the state, prices in Indiana are now a substantial $1.08 per gallon lower than they were just one month ago. However, even with the recent drops, current pump prices remain 43.4 cents per gallon higher than this time last year.

A wide price gap remains across the state, depending on where you fill up. GasBuddy price reports show the cheapest station in Indiana was priced at $2.94 per gallon yesterday, while the most expensive reached $5.09 per gallon—a massive spread of $2.15 per gallon.

Nationally, the average price of gasoline fell 17.9 cents per gallon in the last week, currently sitting at $4.09 per gallon. That national benchmark is down 45.2 cents from last month but remains $1.02 per gallon higher than a year ago. Meanwhile, the national average price of diesel dropped 13.8 cents over the week, averaging $5.299 per gallon.

While Indiana’s statewide average dropped quickly, neighboring metro areas are seeing mixed baselines:

  • Indianapolis: $3.33/g (down 28.5 cents from last week’s $3.62/g)
  • Cincinnati, OH: $3.80/g (down 30.9 cents from last week’s $4.10/g)
  • Champaign, IL: $4.45/g (down 17.7 cents from last week’s $4.63/g)

Why Are Prices Falling?

The downward trend is being driven by a combination of recovering domestic supply and declining global oil costs, with crude oil prices sliding toward $90 per barrel.

Patrick De Haan

“Average gasoline prices declined in virtually every state over the last week as oil prices continued to fall, with crude approaching $90 per barrel and refiners ramping up output following seasonal maintenance,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Despite the welcome break for consumers’ wallets, energy analysts warn that the downward trajectory could easily reverse due to ongoing global trade disruptions.

“The combination of lower oil costs and improving refinery runs has kept downward pressure on pump prices, giving motorists a welcome reprieve,” De Haan noted. “However, the future of prices remains murky. With the Strait of Hormuz remaining effectively closed, global oil supplies continue to tighten, and any further deterioration in the situation could send prices sharply higher. For now, motorists may enjoy the savings at the pump, but the risk of a significant reversal has not gone away.”

Historical Context: June 8 gas prices across 5 years

While current prices are significantly higher than the historic lows of the pandemic recovery era, they represent a massive relief compared to the record-breaking peaks seen four years ago.
