Beau Bayh wins Democratic nomination for Indiana Secretary of State

INDIANA Indiana Democrats have officially selected attorney and Marine Corps veteran Beau Bayh as their nominee for Secretary of State.

The decision came Saturday at the Indiana Democratic State Convention, held at the Indiana Convention Center, where delegates from all 92 counties gathered to map out the party’s statewide ticket.

In the convention’s only contested race, Bayh defeated small-business owner and Army veteran Blythe Potter. Out of 2,269 total ballots cast, Bayh secured 1,383 votes (61%) to Potter’s 885 votes (39%), with one blank ballot recorded. Following the vote, Potter pledged her support to Bayh for the upcoming general election, noting she would exclusively support Democrats this fall while continuing to hold nominees accountable.

With Saturday’s victory, Bayh becomes the third generation of his family to seek statewide elected office in Indiana.

He is the son of Evan Bayh, who served as Indiana’s Secretary of State, a two-term governor, and a U.S. senator. He is also the grandson of Birch Bayh, the former speaker of the Indiana House and a longtime U.S. senator widely known for authoring Title IX.

Before his legal career as a commercial law attorney in Indianapolis, Beau Bayh served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps until his honorable discharge in 2023.

During his acceptance speech, Bayh addressed the responsibilities of the state’s chief election officer, promising a zero-tolerance policy for any illegal voting and stating he has “every intention to serve out honorably in this role.” He also leveled sharp criticism at the current administration, claiming the office is “infested with corruption,” and pledged to increase transparency, protect taxpayer dollars, and improve Indiana’s voter turnout rates.

Uncontested State Ticket Finalized

While the Secretary of State race drew the most debate on the floor, the remainder of the Democratic statewide executive ticket was finalized without opposition:

  • State Treasurer: Nominee Coumba Kebe went uncontested and called for greater transparency in managing state finances.
  • State Comptroller: Nominee Jessica Bailey accepted her uncontested slot to round out the three-person executive team.

The Secretary of State’s office is tasked with significant regulatory oversight, including managing statewide voter registration initiatives, directing state elections, maintaining corporate filings, and monitoring the securities industry.

With the Democratic ticket set, attention now shifts to the Indiana Republican State Convention, which will take place later this month in Fort Wayne to determine who Bayh and the rest of the Democratic ticket will face in November.
