BLOOMINGTON — The “Summer of Fernando” has officially transitioned from the gridiron to the newsstand.
Fresh off leading the Indiana Hoosiers to a historic 16-0 season and the program’s first-ever national championship, Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza has reached a new peak of cultural stardom. This week, the quarterback appeared on the cover of Esquire’s spring “Mavericks of Sports” issue, cementing his status as the most marketable athlete in the nation ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The feature, written by Ryan D’Agostino, offers an intimate look at the man behind the surgical 72% completion rate and the 41 touchdowns that transformed Bloomington into the epicenter of college football.
While the world knows Mendoza for his poise in the pocket, the Esquire story dives deep into the “process-oriented brain” that makes him a nightmare for defensive coordinators. Mendoza describes a “hunter vs. hunted” mindset, revealing that even as the consensus projected No. 1 overall pick, he still views himself as an underdog.
“I try to compare myself to one out of thirty-two potential starting NFL quarterbacks,” Mendoza told Esquire. “I’m not even drafted yet, and I don’t have a starting position. You have to stay hungry.”

Beyond the X’s and O’s, the article highlights the personal trials that shaped Mendoza’s character. Central to his story is his mother, Elsa Mendoza, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2007.
For years, Elsa kept the severity of her condition from her sons to protect them. However, after her health declined following a bout with COVID-19, the family turned their private struggle into a public mission. Fernando and his brother Alberto (who served as IU’s backup QB this past season) have used their platform to raise over $220,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The Mendoza File: A Historic 2025 Season
Mendoza’s rise is one of the greatest “Cinderella” stories in sports history. After transferring to Indiana under head coach Curt Cignetti, he led the Hoosiers to a perfect season.
| Category | 2025 Season Stats |

| Touchdowns | 41 |
| Completion % | 72% |

As the media tour continues, the focus now shifts to the 2026 NFL Draft on April 23. Mendoza is widely expected to be the first name called, likely headed to the Las Vegas Raiders.
For Indiana fans, the Esquire cover is a bittersweet reminder of a golden era. For Mendoza, it’s just another step in a meticulously planned journey from a Miami high schooler with a “Wing-T” offense to the new face of American sports.
