“Spring is in the Air” as Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market kicks off 2026 season

BLOOMINGTON A long winter officially gave way to the vibrant energy of spring this past weekend as the Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market (BCFM), at Showers Commons, 401 North Morton Street, saw record crowds for its early-season festivities. Under much-improved weather conditions, the market transformed into a bustling hub of commerce and community connection, proving once again that it is far more than just a place to buy groceries.

Stalls were arrayed with the first yields of the year, featuring fresh, locally grown produce and vibrant floral arrangements. Local farmers and artisans reported an enthusiastic reception from neighbors eager to reconnect after the winter months.

The Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market is helping residents stretch their food budgets further through its Double SNAP Benefits program. Under this initiative, the market matches SNAP (food stamp) dollars spent at the market, effectively doubling the purchasing power of EBT cardholders. For example, a customer who spends $27 from their EBT card can receive up to $54 worth of fresh, locally grown food per visit. This “supermarket-to-market” advantage allows families to access twice as much fresh produce as they would at a traditional grocery store, and the convenience is extended to those who prefer to shop via online ordering.

Steve and Pam Waterford

Looking ahead to this coming Saturday, the BCFM welcomes the local musical duo Steve Summitt and Pam Waterford. Known for their intricate harmonies and guitar-mandolin instrumentals, Steve and Pam will perform a variety of covers ranging from country to classic rock. The duo is scheduled for two sets—at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., on the BCFM Circular Stage.

Greening the City: Free Seedling Giveaway

In alignment with the City of Bloomington’s commitment to a stable urban forest, the Parks and Recreation Department will host an Urban Forester at the market this Saturday.

The forester will be on hand to answer questions regarding municipal tree health and will provide a limited supply of free seedlings to market customers on a first-come, first-served basis. Available species include:

  • Buttonbush and River Birch
  • Bur Oak and Scarlet Oak
  • Tulip Poplar and Chokecherry

Civic Engagement: Mayor’s Team @ the Table

The BCFM continues to serve as a bridge between residents and local government through the “Mayor’s Team at the Table” outreach program. This Saturday, Bloomington Deputy Mayor Gretchen Knapp will be at the market from 10:00 a.m. to Noon to greet the public, answer questions, and hear community feedback.
