BLOOMINGTON — In the wake of recent severe weather that left a trail of debris through western Monroe County, the Van Buren Township Trustee’s office is calling on the community to help neighbors get back on their feet.

A large-scale volunteer cleanup effort is scheduled for Saturday, February 28, 2026. The focus will be on the Stonechase and Fieldstone neighborhoods, which bore the brunt of the storm damage. Organizers are urging residents from across the region to “show up for our neighbors” and assist in the manual labor of clearing fallen branches and storm-related wreckage.
Volunteers are asked to gather at the Van Buren Community Center to receive assignments and safety briefings:
- When: Saturday, February 28
- Meet Time: 9:30 a.m.
- Where: 352 S. Fieldstone Blvd., Bloomington, IN 47403
Because the work involves handling heavy debris and potentially sharp materials, organizers have issued specific safety guidelines for all participants.
- Attire: Long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe or steel-toe shoes are highly recommended. Don’t forget sunscreen and safety glasses.
- Tools: If you have them, please bring work gloves, rakes, and scoop shovels.
- Chainsaws: Volunteers bringing chainsaws are specifically requested to bring their own fuel, bar oil, and necessary fluids to ensure they can remain operational throughout the day.
To keep the “recovery crew” moving, the Community Center will provide coffee, tea, water, protein bars, and chips throughout the morning. A light lunch will also be served at the center starting at 2:30 p.m. for all those who assisted.
No pre-registration is required, but those with specific questions regarding the cleanup or how to contribute can contact the Van Buren Township Trustee at 812-825-4490.
“This is an opportunity to show the strength of our community,” the Trustee’s office stated. “Together, we can help these families recover and clear the path forward.”
