Mitchell Junior High media students get hands-on look at local broadcast industry during tour of Bedford stations

BEDFORD — Members of the Mitchell Junior High School media class got an insider’s look into the modern broadcast and multimedia industry during a tour of the radio stations headquartered on Heltonville Road in Bedford.

Sean Duncan, host of 105.5 WQRK’s flagship program, shared an insider’s look at local entertainment

The facility, located at 424 Heltonville Road, houses three distinct stations: FM outlets Southern Indiana’s Classic Hits 105.5 and 102.5 LiteFM, along with AM station 1340 WBIW.

Led by teacher Tatelyn Cline, the visiting group included eighth graders Elizabeth Allen, Klare Cline, Ellison Goins, Emmalee Keels, Emery Martin, Braxton Perry, Acelynn Rayhill, Madi Sanders, Madison Smith, Jimma Sneed, and Lyla Stillions, along with seventh graders Carter Collins, Sapphire Fincel, Kenia Gonzalez-Santos, Halle Harris, Makenna Kristan, Zayden Quearry, Dane Redman, Sage Terrell, Kaislynn Torres, and Lexi Whaley.

During the visit, students learned that operating a contemporary media organization extends well beyond traditional broadcasting. Staff members across several departments, including on-air personalities, graphic designers, marketing professionals, and company executives, guided the students through the daily operations of the multi-faceted business.

Throughout the tour, station personnel highlighted the diverse services offered under one roof. In addition to radio broadcasting services that include sports, music, local news, interviews, and community updates, the company delivers digital news publishing, graphic design, targeted marketing strategies, and sales opportunities.

Students were given an end-to-end look at the facility, touring each station’s individual studio, a specialized production room, engineering spaces, and a live-broadcast interview studio. They were also offered a hands-on experience in the recording booth, where they had the opportunity to record good luck messages to air during upcoming Mitchell sports broadcasts.

By opening their doors, station staff shared decades of collective radio and mixed-media expertise, providing valuable context for students interested in pursuing careers or hobbies in the media field.
