BLOOMINGTON — Wheeler Mission – Bloomington will celebrate the completion of its newly renovated facilities with a community open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Sept. 25.
The public event marks the culmination of the organization’s “Transforming Lives, Building Hope” comprehensive capital campaign, representing a community investment of over $4 million to enhance services for men experiencing homelessness in Monroe County and surrounding south-central Indiana communities.

Facility Improvements and Upgrades
Rather than increasing overnight bed capacity, the $4 million campaign was specifically designed to transform how Wheeler Mission welcomes, serves, and cares for its guests.
Renovations and physical infrastructure upgrades to the Westplex Avenue facility include:
- New Welcome Center: Creates a more secure, controlled, and hospitable point of entry for guests and visitors.
- Modernized Kitchen & Dining Area: Improves daily meal distribution while establishing a supportive environment designed to accommodate culinary job-skills training.
- Guest Storage & Outdoor Space: Adds individual lockers for personal property security and a secured outdoor courtyard.
- On-Site Care Center: Features dedicated office spaces and a clinical exam room, enabling community healthcare partners and social service providers to work directly with guests on-site.
- Expanded Administrative & Educational Space: Provides additional rooms for one-on-one case management, counseling, and classroom instruction.
Focus on Holistic Care and Independence
The physical renovations directly support Wheeler Mission’s Christ-centered, whole-person care approach. Beyond emergency shelter, the comprehensive campaign funds ongoing staffing and program operations that allow staff to deliver individualized care, case management, work readiness, and addiction recovery resources to help guests transition toward employment and permanent housing.
Organizers noted that nearly all of the project’s funding was provided by local donors—including individuals, area businesses, foundations, churches, and civic organizations—highlighting community support for the ministry’s regional work.
