BEDFORD — The Lawrence County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) partnered with local and state first responders to execute its annual hazardous materials tabletop exercise, focusing on emergency coordination and containment strategies during environmental crises. Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer updated the commissioner this morning on the exercise.
The two-hour training session took place at the Bedford Fire Department headquarters on H Street.
This year’s tabletop exercise centered on a simulated transportation accident involving a major fertilizer spill threatening a local creek. The scenario allowed emergency management personnel, fire departments, law enforcement, and environmental safety officials to review established response protocols, practice real-time inter-agency communication, and refine spill containment strategies in a controlled setting.
Representatives from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) joined local officials to offer guidance on regulatory procedures and environmental containment tactics.
“The exercise went extremely well,” said Luchauer. “IDEM joined the conversation and provided valuable information.”
According to Luchauer, tabletop exercises serve as a critical planning tool for regional emergency response agencies, ensuring local first responders and state regulatory bodies maintain seamless operational coordination before an actual disaster strikes.
“By working through complex transportation and hazardous spill scenarios together, participating agencies can identify potential communication gaps, clarify jurisdictional responsibilities, and streamline resources to better protect local waterways and public safety,” she added.
