LAWRENCE COUNTY — Nearly 400 local second-grade students had the opportunity to see potential career paths come to life during “Careers on Wheels,” a county-wide career exploration event held at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
Hosted by Mitchell Community Schools and North Lawrence Community Schools in partnership with the Lawrence County Economic Growth Council (LCEGC), the event brought together 374 second graders and their teachers from Lawrence County Independent Schools, Mitchell Community Schools, and North Lawrence Community Schools for an engaging morning of hands-on learning.
“Careers on Wheels” was designed to introduce young students to a wide variety of local and regional professions, specifically focusing on careers that utilize vehicles, specialized equipment, technology, and trade tools.
Throughout the morning, students rotated across dynamic career stations where they could inspect vehicles up close, interact directly with working professionals, ask questions, and learn what daily operations look like across various industries.
A diverse group of local businesses, emergency services, and community organizations participated in the showcase, including:

Building Early Career Awareness
Event organizers highlighted the importance of fostering early career awareness long before students begin selecting high school pathways or postsecondary plans. By connecting local schools, public service agencies, and area employers, the event aimed to inspire young minds about future possibilities right in their home community.
With 374 students learning alongside local professionals, “Careers on Wheels” showcased the impact of community-wide collaboration in helping students discover and imagine their future careers.
