Bedford Middle School to celebrate BMS Reads Week

BEDFORD — Bedford Middle School will celebrate BMS Reads Week next week with a variety of activities designed to promote the joy of reading and encourage students to discover books they genuinely enjoy.

Throughout the week, students will take part in book-themed spirit days, a pep rally, a PJs and Pajamas reading event, and the BMS Book Fair.

The school is also introducing a new tradition this year called First Chapter Readings.

Several Bedford Middle School teachers and central office staff members recorded themselves reading the first chapter of a book they love. During advisory each day, students will hear one of the recordings, with the goal of introducing them to books they may want to read themselves.

If students respond positively to the recordings, the school plans to continue the First Chapter Fridays tradition throughout the school year.

The effort is part of BMS’s larger goal of helping students view reading as more than an assignment — but as something they can choose, discuss and enjoy.
