Red Cross calls for donors to prevent fall blood shortage

INDIANA — As fall schedules pick up and daily routines shift, the American Red Cross is urging community members to schedule blood or platelet donation appointments this September. Following a summer of critically low supply levels, the nation’s blood supply remains vulnerable, making donations across all blood types essential for ongoing patient care.

Appointments can be booked via RedCrossBlood.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or through the Red Cross Blood Donor App.

Promotional Giveaways for Donors

To thank community members for stepping up, the Red Cross is offering several incentives throughout the month:

  • Sept. 1–20: Donors will receive an exclusive Red Cross x Hello Kitty® plush mascot clip and a surprise sticker pack (while supplies last).
  • Sept. 21–Oct. 18: Donors will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice.
  • Sept. 21–30: Donors visiting Red Cross blood donation centers who mention “pickleball” to staff or volunteers can receive a custom Red Cross pickleball paddle and ball (limited quantities available).

Honoring Dr. Charles R. Drew

This year marks the 85th anniversary of Dr. Charles R. Drew’s appointment as the first medical director of the Red Cross Blood Program. To honor his legacy, the Red Cross is releasing a short documentary, Iconic Excellence, streaming on the Red Cross YouTube channel starting Sept. 18. The public is invited to honor Dr. Drew by donating, encouraging others to give, or hosting documentary screenings.

Upcoming Blood Donation Opportunities (Sept. 8–30)

Donors must present a blood donor card, driver’s license, or two other forms of ID at check-in. Eligible donors must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent where allowed), weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in generally good health.
