CALIFORNIA — Disney fans have plenty to look forward to after the company unveiled a packed slate of upcoming movies during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, held Aug. 14–16 in Anaheim.
The Disney Entertainment Showcase brought first looks, new announcements, casting news and release dates for movies spanning Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century Studios. From the return of beloved animated franchises to brand-new stories, Disney’s upcoming lineup stretches well into 2029.
Here are some of the biggest movie announcements from the event.
‘The Simpsons’ Movie
Disney kicked off its showcase with a first look at an upcoming The Simpsons movie. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters Sept. 3, 2027. Disney has not yet revealed many details about the story, but the announcement marks another major step for the long-running animated franchise on the big screen.
‘Lilo & Stitch 2’
The live-action success of Lilo & Stitch is getting a sequel.
Lilo & Stitch 2 will continue the story of Lilo and her blue alien companion Stitch, with Maia Kealoha returning as Lilo. Fans at D23 also got a surprise introduction to Angel, another popular character from the animated franchise.
The movie is scheduled to open in theaters May 26, 2028.
‘The Bluey Movie’
Bluey is officially heading to the big screen.
Disney debuted a teaser trailer and poster for The Bluey Movie, a CG-animated feature based on the popular Australian series about Bluey, Bingo, Bandit and Chilli.
The film will follow the Heeler family through an eventful day that begins with a major surprise. Creator Joe Brumm is writing and directing the movie, which is scheduled for theaters Aug. 6, 2027.
‘Ice Age: Boiling Point’
The Ice Age gang is back for another prehistoric adventure.
Ice Age: Boiling Point will send Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, Buck and the rest of the herd into a dangerous Lost World filled with dinosaurs and lava.
The movie also introduces Jurassic Scrat, a prehistoric relative of the acorn-obsessed Scrat.
The film is scheduled for an exclusive theatrical release Feb. 5, 2027.
Live-Action ‘Tangled’
Disney is bringing Rapunzel back to the big screen in a live-action adaptation of Tangled.
Teagan Croft will play Rapunzel, while Milo Manheim will portray Flynn Rider. Kathryn Hahn will play Mother Gothel, and Diego Luna has joined the cast as a new character named Hawthorne.
The movie, directed by Michael Gracey, is set to arrive in theaters March 31, 2028.
‘Incredibles 3’
Pixar is bringing the Parr family back for Incredibles 3.
D23 attendees received an exclusive first look at the next chapter featuring the superhero family. Peter Sohn will direct the film, with Brad Bird and Dana Murray serving as producers.
Incredibles 3 is scheduled to hit theaters June 16, 2028.
‘Coco 2’
Miguel is growing up.
Pixar revealed new concept art for Coco 2, showing Miguel as a teenager. The sequel will also bring back Ernesto de la Cruz, whose return sets Miguel on another journey into the Land of the Dead.
The creative team behind the original Coco is returning for the sequel, which is expected in theaters November 2029.
‘Ghost Market’
Pixar is venturing into supernatural territory with Ghost Market, a brand-new original film.
The story centers on Kyle, a fast-talking kid who accidentally discovers a hidden market on Oʻahu’s North Shore where lost spirits remain caught between life and death.
The movie is directed by Trevor Jimenez and Jesse Andrews and is scheduled for theaters in March 2028.
‘Gatto’
Pixar also offered a look at Gatto, an animated adventure set in Venice, Italy.
The film follows Nero, a scrappy black cat who begins questioning the life he’s been living while dealing with a local feline crime boss. A surprising friendship could ultimately lead Nero toward his purpose.
Gatto is directed by Enrico Casarosa, who previously directed Luca, and is scheduled for theaters March 5, 2027.
‘Zootopia 3’
Fans of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde’s world also received some major news: Zootopia 3 is officially in development.
Disney Animation showed an exclusive sequence at D23, but the studio has not announced a release date yet.
‘Frozen 3’
Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff and Sven are returning for another adventure in Frozen 3.
Disney unveiled new animation during the showcase that teased a new villain whose powers may rival Elsa’s. Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad also performed new music from the upcoming movie.
Frozen 3 is scheduled to open in theaters Nov. 24, 2027.
‘Clay’
Disney Animation also revealed Clay, a new original animated adventure.
The film is set in a magical forest filled with fantastical creatures and follows Flip, a rebellious misfit who is unexpectedly selected to mentor a young ball of clay named Mushy.
Academy Award winner Kieran Culkin will voice Flip. The movie is expected in theaters in 2028.
Marvel’s ‘X-Men’
One of the biggest surprises of D23 came from Marvel, which finally revealed the cast of its upcoming X-Men movie.
The cast includes:
- Sadie Sink as Jean Grey
- Kit Connor as Cyclops
- Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier
- Samara Weaving as Emma Frost
- Inde Navarrette as Rogue
- Maya Boyd as Storm
- Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury
The currently untitled X-Men film is scheduled for release May 5, 2028.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel also gave fans a new look at Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to arrive Dec. 18, 2026.
The movie will bring together heroes from three different universes as they face an enormous threat. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom, alongside a massive ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd and many more.
‘Star Wars: Starfighter’
A new Star Wars adventure is also on the way.
Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, will tell a new story set in the galaxy far, far away. Gosling plays a character whose past catches up with him after he becomes involved in a dangerous adventure.
The cast also includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre and Amy Adams.
The movie is scheduled for theaters May 28, 2027.
More Disney movies on the way
D23 also provided updates on several other projects, including the sequel Romy & Michele 2, which will premiere exclusively on Hulu in 2027. Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are returning for the follow-up to the 1997 comedy.
