Officer-involved shooting under investigation in Gary

GARY – Detectives from the Indiana State Police Lowell Post were requested Friday night, August 28, to investigate an officer‑involved shooting near the metro station at Broadway and 4th Avenue in Gary.

At approximately 10:54 p.m., Gary Police and Lake County Sheriff’s officers responded to a report of an armed security officer exhibiting unusual and erratic behavior. Officers attempted to de‑escalate the situation; however, at about 11:20 p.m., a confrontation occurred between the suspect and responding officers, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Lake County Coroner has completed the identification of the individual.

The initial investigation determined that six Gary Police officers and three Lake County Sheriff’s officers discharged their weapons. In accordance with agency policy, all involved officers have been placed on administrative leave. At this stage of the investigation, the Indiana State Police will not be identifying the officers and will defer any release of names to the respective agencies.
