BLOOMINGTON — With a visit by acclaimed character actor Doug Jones, a centennial celebration of Marilyn Monroe, restored classics and Halloween thrills, Indiana University Cinema’s fall season offers something for every movie lover.
The season begins August 18 with a 4K restoration of “Legally Blonde,” followed by IU Cinema’s annual open house on August 20.
Jones — an Indiana native known for his memorable performances in “The Shape of Water,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “What We Do in the Shadows” — will visit Bloomington as part of the Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Series. His appearance includes an onstage conversation, a screening of “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” and a post-film Q&A. Guests can also catch Jones’ work in special screenings of “Hellboy” and “Hocus Pocus.”
The Arthouse Now series, formerly International Art House, will feature acclaimed international and independent films, including:
- “Sirât.”
- “The Secret Agent.”
- “Days and Nights in the Forest.”
- “Resurrection.”
- Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice.”
- The Indiana premiere of “Everybody to Kenmure Street.”
October brings the return of Friday Night Frights, headlined by a new 4K restoration of Guillermo del Toro’s debut feature, “Cronos.” Additional screenings include:
- David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers.”
- A 100th-anniversary screening of “Faust,” featuring a live score by organic-electro duo ten thousand lakes.
- The 4K restoration of “Don’t Look Now.”
- A double feature of “Scream” and “Cabin in the Woods.”
- A Halloween-night pairing of “Best Wishes to All” and “Gozu.”
Marilyn Monroe centennial celebration
The season also honors Marilyn Monroe in her centennial year with Happy Birthday, Ms. Monroe, a four-film series featuring “Don’t Bother to Knock,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” “How to Marry a Millionaire” and “Niagara.” Rare Monroe-related items from the Lilly Library and the Black Film Center & Archive will also be displayed in IU Cinema’s lower lobby.
IU Cinema Jon Vickers Scoring Award anniversary
IU Cinema will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of the IU Cinema Jon Vickers Scoring Award, produced in partnership with the Jacobs School of Music. The program commissions original scores for silent films from Jacobs students and has helped launch the careers of numerous young composers.
Anniversary events include encore presentations of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” featuring composer and IU alumnus Ryn Jorgensen, and “Grass: A Nation’s Battle for Life,” whose score will receive its first IU Cinema screening after debuting online during the pandemic.

Other events include:
- A 100th-anniversary screening of “The Flying Ace” with live music and a Q&A.
- A New Americas Cinema spotlight on Caribbean filmmaking.
- A Re:Made series pairing “The Wages of Fear” with its remake, “Sorcerer.”
- A free all-day marathon of Stephen King film adaptations presented with Union Board Films.
