BLOOMINGTON — The Mill, Bloomington’s flagship hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, will officially celebrate the completion of a major interior renovation on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. ET.
The overhaul introduces an array of expanded physical and technological capabilities to the historic Showers Brothers Furniture factory location, directly addressing surging demand from local founders, remote workers, and growing tech ventures.
Managed by Amplify Bloomington and owned by the City of Bloomington’s Redevelopment Commission, the 19,000-square-foot facility serves as the cornerstone of the city’s 12-acre Trades District.
The newly completed renovation focuses on optimizing internal layouts to add functional capacity without altering the historic footprint of the building. Key updates include:
- 30 New Individual Workspaces: Expanding options for remote professionals and early-stage entrepreneurs.
- 3 New Private Offices: Providing dedicated footprints for scaling companies.
- Rebuilt Event Hall: Upgraded with improved acoustic controls, privacy enhancements, and modern presentation technology to accommodate larger community gatherings and pitch events.
- Enhanced Collaboration Areas: Redesigned common spaces structured to foster networking and strategic breakout work.
“Expanding our capacity represents another major milestone for The Mill,” said John Fernandez, CEO of Amplify Bloomington. “By supporting the innovators building businesses at The Mill, we’re shaping Bloomington’s economic future.”
Since opening its doors in late 2018, demand for space at The Mill has steadily outpaced capacity. Membership currently exceeds 390 members, and private office spaces inside the facility have reached 100% occupancy.
The expansion project is a key component of the broader “Accelerating the Transformation of Bloomington’s Trades District” initiative—a joint economic initiative bringing together Indiana University, the City of Bloomington, and The Mill. The initiative is supported in part by major grant funding awarded to Indiana University Bloomington by Lilly Endowment Inc.
The collaborative effort aims to cultivate high-wage, high-demand career pathways in southern Indiana while establishing the Trades District as an integrated “innovation neighborhood” connecting housing, tech infrastructure, and commercial enterprise.
