INDIANAPOLIS — Fairgoers heading to the Indiana State Fair can beat the summer heat while connecting with the Hoosier State’s natural heritage at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Building.
Located in the northwest corner of the fairgrounds, the air-conditioned facility will welcome visitors throughout the fair’s run from August 7 through August 23 (closed on Mondays).
Interactive Exhibits, Free Guides, and Aquariums
The DNR Building serves as a central hub for outdoor enthusiasts, families, and anyone looking for a refreshing break from the midway. Inside, visitors can:
- Gather State Resources: Pick up free copies of the latest Indiana Recreation Guide, Fishing Guide, and Hunting & Trapping Guide.
- Explore Wildlife Displays: View live native fish species swimming in large indoor aquariums.
- Connect with Experts: Chat with knowledgeable DNR biologists, conservation officers, and staff members to get answers to outdoor recreation and wildlife questions.
Milestone Celebration: DNR Fishin’ Pond Turns 20
This year’s fair marks a major milestone for one of the DNR’s most beloved traditions: The DNR State Fair Fishin’ Pond is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Since launching in 2006, the program has provided thousands of youth ages 5 to 17 with the opportunity to catch a fish for free right at the fairgrounds.
Fishin’ Pond Schedule:
- Tuesdays & Wednesdays: 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
- Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Volunteer Opportunities Available
To ensure every young angler gets a chance to cast a line, the DNR is actively seeking volunteers to assist at the Fishin’ Pond throughout the fair. Volunteer roles include assisting at registration desks, preparing tackle and equipment, and guiding young participants as they fish.
