LINTON — Community members and first responders will come together this summer as Greene County hosts its annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Linton Humphreys Park.
The free family event is part of a nationwide initiative aimed at strengthening the bond between law enforcement agencies and the neighborhoods they serve.
Designed as an evening of community building and fun, Greene County’s National Night Out offers residents a chance to interact directly with local police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel in a relaxed, festive setting.
Attendees can look forward to a variety of family-friendly activities, including:
- Touch-a-Truck & Equipment Displays: Kids and adults alike can explore emergency vehicles, check out police cruisers, and meet specialty law enforcement units up close.
- Free Food and Giveaways: Event organizers and local sponsors typically provide complimentary refreshments, snacks, and informational safety gear.
- Games & Entertainment: Interactive games, resource booths hosted by local organizations, and family activities designed to keep kids engaged.
- Crime Prevention Resources: First responders will be on hand to answer questions, share neighborhood watch tips, and offer safety advice for families.
The Story Behind the Movement
Celebrated annually on the first Tuesday in August, National Night Out was established in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). What began as simple porch-light vigils across suburban neighborhoods has grown into a massive national campaign involving over 38 million people and thousands of communities across all 50 states.
“National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community,” the NATW states regarding the event’s mission. “Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.”
By providing an informal, accessible space for dialogue, the event helps dismantle barriers between law enforcement and citizens, fostering mutual trust and creating safer, more connected neighborhoods.
