BLOOMINGTON – Bloomingfoods Co-op Market, one of Indiana’s longest-running food cooperatives, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a Block Party and Birthday savings for shoppers honoring five decades of local ownership, sustainable food systems, and support for regional farmers and producers. Everyone is welcome!
What began in 1975 as a grassroots effort by community members seeking access to wholesome food and a more democratic way of doing business has grown into one of Indiana’s most enduring cooperative enterprises. After securing a loan from resident Kathy Canada and spending months transforming a vacant limestone garage into a grocery store, Bloomingfoods officially opened its doors on July 24, 1976.
Over the past 50 years, Bloomingfoods has evolved alongside the Bloomington community while remaining committed to the cooperative principles that inspired its founding. From its early days as a volunteer-driven startup to its growth into a multi-location market serving thousands of owners and shoppers, the co-op has championed local farmers, sustainable food systems, and community engagement.
Throughout its history, Bloomingfoods has weathered economic challenges, industry changes, and shifting consumer trends while maintaining its mission of providing access to high-quality natural, organic, and locally sourced foods. The co-op has expanded its impact through partnerships with local farms and organizations, educational programming, community giving initiatives, and support for a vibrant regional food economy.
The 50th birthday celebration is an opportunity to honor the people and stories that have shaped Bloomingfoods over the last five decades. The co-op invites owners, shoppers, current and former employees, and community partners and members to join in commemorating this milestone and reflecting on the collective achievements that made it possible.
