J. Stephen “Steve” Gill, 86, of Seymour, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, surrounded by his family.
Born on February 6, 1940, in Seymour, Indiana, he was the son of John Henry and Doris M. (Fox) Gill. Steve was a 1958 graduate of Shields High School in Seymour.
He was a businessman, owner and operator of Steve Gill Trucking and Excavating, and co-owner of Gill Enterprises LLC and Real Estate, and a Jackson County Commissioner for over twenty years. While doing all those things, he worked for Cummins in maintenance for fifty-nine years before retiring in 2017. Steve loved and cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose life was a testament to love, dedication, and hard work.
Steve was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post #1925 in Seymour, American Legion Post #89 in Seymour, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #655 in Seymour, and the Knights of Columbus in Seymour. He was an avid hunter and marksman. Steve enjoyed sport shooting with friends and skeet shooting, working hard, supporting his sons in their endeavors, and, later in life, watching his grandson’s sporting events and simply spending time at home with his family.
Steve is survived by his sons, Frederick S. “Fred” Gill of Seymour and Toby L. Gill of Seymour; his grandson, Camden Lopez Gill of Seymour; his sisters, Diane (Oscar) Villalvazo of Orange County, California, and Linda Trimpe of Seymour; his brother, Ted R. Gill of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Doris Gill; his wife, Janet Gill; and his brother-in-law, Richard Trimpe.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, with Father Daniel Staublin officiating. Entombment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the Burkholder Chapel of Thorne Family Funeral Homes, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made in Steve’s memory to St. Ambrose Catholic Church or Disabled American Veterans.
