One injured, Emergency Shelter opened in Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY Severe thunderstorms ripped through northwestern Monroe County on Wednesday evening, June 17, leaving behind a trail of heavy structural damage, downed power lines, and localized flooding.

The storm system packed destructive winds and torrential rainfall, focusing its impact on a rural region just outside the town of Stinesville, near Gosport and the southern Morgan County border.

Local officials confirmed that one person was injured during the storm and has been transported to an area hospital. An update on their condition was not immediately available.

The Monroe County Emergency Management Agency is currently on the ground conducting damage assessments. Multiple structures within the rural area have been reported damaged, and widespread downed trees and power lines have made travel exceptionally difficult.

Emergency officials are urging the public to stay clear of the hardest-hit zones.

Residents are asked to refrain from traveling in the rural areas stretching from outside Stinesville to the Owen and Morgan County borders to allow first responders to safely do their jobs. Additionally, motorists must avoid Bottom Road until further notice due to severe flooding.
