Martinsville woman killed in two-vehicle crash in Morgan County

MORGAN COUNTY — A 69-year-old Martinsville woman lost her life Wednesday morning following a two-vehicle collision at a Morgan County intersection, authorities said.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were dispatched to the intersection of State Road 142 and Wilbur Road at approximately 10 a.m. to investigate a crash.

Upon arriving at the scene, emergency responders located a 2013 GMC pickup truck—which was hauling a trailer loaded with lawn equipment—and a 2001 Honda Accord that had sustained heavy damage.

According to investigators, a preliminary investigation based on witness statements and physical evidence indicates that the driver of the Honda Accord failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection. The Accord then pulled directly into the path of the oncoming GMC pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup truck attempted to swerve to avoid the collision, but the maneuver was unsuccessful. The truck struck the driver’s side door of the Accord.

First responders rendered immediate medical aid to the driver of the Accord, identified by authorities as Pamela Hampton, 69, of Martinsville. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two occupants inside the pickup truck escaped the collision without injury. A dog traveling in Hampton’s vehicle survived the crash and was transported to a local veterinary clinic to be evaluated.

In accordance with Indiana state law, the driver of the pickup truck was subjected to chemical testing at the scene. Officials have not stated whether they suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, and the incident remains under investigation by the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
