Mitchell Community Public Library unveils dinosaur-themed 2026 Summer Reading Program

MITCHELL To help local students combat the “summer slide” and keep young minds active, the Mitchell Community Public Library has officially announced the launch of its 2026 Summer Reading Program.

This year’s program features an exciting dinosaur theme, anchored by the slogan “Unearth a Story,” and introduces young readers to a friendly blue triceratops mascot named Digby.

The program is entirely free and open to children and families throughout Lawrence County.

Families looking to participate can get a head start on the summer action next week.

  • Registration Opens: Tuesday, May 26, 2026
  • Program Duration: June 1 through August 1, 2026

By registering early, participants can prepare their reading logs ahead of the official June kickoff.

The two-month initiative is designed to reward children for the time they spend reading over their summer vacation. Participants will have the opportunity to earn a variety of prizes as they hit specific reading milestones.

In addition to tracking their books, families can take advantage of a full calendar of free, fun public programs hosted at the library all summer long. These events will offer interactive activities, educational entertainment, and community gatherings tailored to various age groups.

Parents and guardians can register their children starting May 26. For more information on how to sign up, track reading hours, or to view the full schedule of summer events, residents can visit the library’s main desk or check the official Mitchell Community Public Library website.
