State officials offer $5,000 reward following string of suspicious fires on Washington’s west side

WASHINGTON— A coordinated state and local investigation is underway after three structure fires broke out within a single hour on the west side of Washington on Monday evening, May 18, 2026.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the City of Washington are treating the closely timed incidents with a high degree of urgency. Due to the tight geographical proximity and near-simultaneous timing, investigators are looking into the strong possibility of arson and are asking for the public’s immediate assistance.

Timeline of the Monday Evening Blazes

Emergency crews responded to three distinct locations in rapid succession:

  • 5:15 p.m. at 307 Cable Avenue: Firefighters were first dispatched to a mobile home fire on the city’s west side, where heavy smoke and flames were reported.
  • 6:00 p.m. at 512 Vine Street: Just 45 minutes later, while crews were still managing the initial scene, a second dispatch was sent out for another mobile home fire just blocks away.
  • 6:15 p.m. at Bent Avenue: Exactly 15 minutes after the second blaze, a third fire was reported inside a residential home currently under construction.

While the official causes of the fires remain under active investigation, city and state officials note that the cluster of incidents has triggered a serious, comprehensive response.

“Because the incidents occurred so close together in both time and location, officials say they are treating the situation seriously and are asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity to contact authorities,” state fire officials shared in a combined release.

Authorities are leaning on the eyes and ears of the Washington community to help crack the case. Anyone who was in the area of Cable Avenue, Vine Street, or Bent Avenue between 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM on Monday and noticed unusual behavior, unfamiliar vehicles, or suspicious foot traffic is strongly urged to come forward.

A reward of up to $5,000 is available for any information that directly leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
