Red Cross urges regional blood and platelet donations ahead of critical summer season

INDIANA — As communities prepare for the Memorial Day holiday, the American Red Cross is issuing an urgent call for residents to schedule blood and platelet donation appointments. Keeping hospital shelves fully stocked in the coming weeks is a vital pillar of summer safety, ensuring medical facilities can respond instantly to emergencies.

With millions of Americans expected to hit the roads, lakes, and campgrounds over the holiday weekend, the statistical risk of traumatic accidents increases significantly. Blood and platelets available on hospital shelves are critical for treating severe injuries and massive bleeding.

Recognizing Trauma Awareness Month, officials emphasize that donors of all blood types are needed now to support patients who rely on regular, lifesaving transfusions.

Donor Incentives: Beach Towels and Gift Cards

To encourage donors to book appointments during this crucial transition period, the Red Cross is offering exclusive seasonal incentives:

  • May Donations (Through May 31, 2026): All who come to give by the end of the month will receive an oversized Red Cross beach towel, while supplies last.
  • June Donations (June 1 – June 28, 2026): All donors will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice, plus automatic entry into a drawing to win one of two $7,500 gift cards.
