Seymour launches public survey to shape five-year parks master plan

SEYMOUR The City of Seymour is inviting residents to shape the future of the local parks and recreation system. Local officials have officially launched an online public survey to gather community input for the upcoming Seymour Parks Five-Year Master Plan.

The master plan serves as a strategic roadmap, guiding the Parks and Recreation Department’s goals, objectives, and long-term vision. It helps city leaders identify crucial needs for community programming, park maintenance, and facility upgrades.

Beyond serving as a community wishlist, the five-year master plan is a critical administrative tool. Having an updated plan on file is a strict requirement for Seymour to remain eligible for various state and federal grants, including those from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). These grants often fund major capital improvements, land acquisitions, and modern facility upgrades that might otherwise burden local taxpayers.

The Seymour Parks and Recreation Department is seeking comprehensive feedback from residents of all ages. The survey specifically asks community members to share:

  • Which local parks and green spaces they visit most frequently.
  • The specific facilities, playgrounds, and sports fields they utilize.
  • Their satisfaction levels with current park programming, events, and recreational activities.
  • Ideas for future improvements, new amenities, or desired program additions.

Seymour’s park system—which includes popular destinations like Gaiser Park, Shields Park, and the Freeman Field Recreational Complex—plays a vital role in the city’s quality of life and economic development. Modern park systems are increasingly tied to community health outcomes and property values, making resident input vital for balanced city growth.

In previous planning cycles, community feedback in Seymour has successfully driven projects such as trail expansions, playground accessibility upgrades, and the addition of popular community amenities like pickleball courts and splash pads.
