ELLETTSVILLE — A Bloomington man is in critical condition following a single-vehicle accident Monday morning that temporarily shut down a major local roadway.

According to a press release from the Ellettsville Police Department, emergency crews were dispatched to the intersection of West State Road 46 and Tupelo Drive at approximately 9:44 a.m. to investigate reports of a crash.

Upon arrival, responding officers discovered a 2015 Jeep resting in a ditch.

A preliminary investigation by law enforcement revealed that the Jeep veered off the road, collided with a fire hydrant, before plunging into the ditch. Authorities have not yet specified what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.

The driver, identified as a 64-year-old man, sustained severe injuries. He was treated at the scene by emergency personnel before being rushed to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The crash triggered a significant emergency response, prompting the closure of the surrounding roadway for several hours.

The Monroe County Major Crash Investigation Team was called to the scene to conduct a thorough examination of the area.

Lanes were blocked while investigators gathered evidence and specialized crews worked to clear the wreckage and debris.

No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the incident. Ellettsville Police stated that no further details are available at this time as the investigation remains active.
