OAKLAND CITY — Oakland City University (OCU) announced major institutional changes today, informing employees of upcoming layoffs and revealing plans to temporarily suspend its undergraduate programs.

In a statement released on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the university administration confirmed that the staff and faculty layoffs will take effect on May 31, 2026.
The university is currently contacting its undergraduate student body to provide official notice of the program suspensions. Administration stated that students will be provided with direct guidance, academic counseling, and structural options for their next steps as the university transitions.
While undergraduate operations face a temporary shutdown, the university is not closing its doors entirely:
- Graduate Programs: OCU will continue to offer its graduate-level degree programs without interruption.
- Undergraduate Timeline: The suspension of undergraduate programs is intended to be temporary. The university announced it is actively preparing to resume undergraduate operations for the 2027–28 academic year.
The southwestern Indiana institution did not immediately cite the specific financial or enrollment factors leading to the sudden restructuring.
University officials concluded the announcement by stating that there are no additional updates or further comments available at this time.
