Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra announces CEO transition

INDIANA — The Board of Directors of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) today announced that James Johnson, Chief Executive Officer since 2018, has informed the ISO that he will step down from the role at the end of the ISO’s classical season on June 20. The Board will initiate a comprehensive national search for a successor and has appointed former Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra CEO Jonathan Martin as interim Chief Operating Officer.

During Johnson’s tenure, the Symphony expanded its audience reach, deepened its commitment to community engagement, and achieved artistic milestones across talent, programming, and sound. Notable accomplishments include elevating the ISO’s profile for artistic excellence through the hire of Music Director Jun Märkl and a host of leading musicians, as well as launching several new community partnerships with organizations such as the IU Jacobs School of Music, the Indianapolis Ballet, Butler Arts & Events, GANGGANG, the Sphinx Organization, and the Hoosier Art Salon.

“Through a tireless work ethic, a commitment to embracing new initiatives and nurturing community partnerships, and a deep belief in the power of music, James led us through the most comprehensive strategic planning effort in the organization’s history and set the tone for artistic excellence, with the ISO sounding better now than at any time in memory,” said Eric Sutphin, Chair of the Board of Directors. Sutphin continued, “We are profoundly grateful for James’ contributions.”

Johnson added, “It has been a privilege and an honor to serve the ISO. I am proud of what we have accomplished together—our musicians, conductors, staff, board, donors, ISO Foundation, and community partners. I leave with great confidence in the Symphony’s continued success and enduring mission.”

The Board emphasized that the ISO is poised for long-term success. Supported by widespread community backing, a solid endowment, and a dynamic schedule of upcoming performances and initiatives, the organization remains steadfast in its dedication to artistic excellence and community engagement.”

“We have an exceptional team of musicians and conductors, a dedicated staff, and a loyal base of supporters. Together, we will build on this momentum and continue delivering world-class performances while expanding our reach across the region,” said Sutphin.
