History in Bloom: Guided cemetery tours to highlight Bloomington’s past and famous peonies

BLOOMINGTON The City of Bloomington is inviting residents to step back in time this May with “History in Bloom,” a series of guided historical tours at the historic Rose Hill Cemetery.

Scheduled for Saturday, May 16, the event is designed to coincide with the spectacular annual bloom of the cemetery’s famed peonies, offering a scenic backdrop for a journey through local history.

Rose Hill Cemetery, located at 1100 W. 4th St., serves as the final resting place for many of Bloomington’s most notable figures. During the one-hour guided tours, live historical reenactors will be stationed throughout the grounds to share the personal stories and legacies of those interred there.

Tour Options & Schedule:

  • 3:00 p.m. & 4:00 p.m.: Standard one-hour guided walking tours ($10/person).
  • 5:00 p.m.: An accessible tour conducted via golf carts for those with mobility needs ($10/person).
  • 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.: Self-guided tours featuring an educational brochure ($5/person, on-site registration only).

Space for the guided segments is limited, and pre-registration is required by May 8. Officials noted that no walk-up participation will be available for the 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., or 5:00 p.m. guided tours.

The event is open to participants ages 12 and older. In the event of inclement weather, a rain date has been set for Sunday, May 17.

Participants should be prepared for approximately 45 minutes of walking on uneven ground and periods of standing to listen to the reenactors. Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.

Rose Hill is well-known throughout Southern Indiana for its extensive collection of heritage peonies, many of which were planted decades ago by families of the deceased. The peak bloom typically occurs in mid-to-late May, making it a popular destination for both history buffs and horticultural enthusiasts.
