BEDFORD — A Flood Warning has been issued for Lawrence, Daviess, Western Jackson, Knox, and Martin Counties until 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, following extreme rainfall and heavy storms that swept through the region overnight.
According to the National Weather Service, flooding is already occurring in the warned areas. While no additional rainfall is expected, flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and low-lying areas will continue throughout the day.
Impact in Orleans
The Town of Orleans has been particularly hard hit by the overnight storms, with local officials reporting numerous areas underwater. High water has forced the closure of several key routes:
- Adams and Monroe Streets: Currently flooded and closed to all traffic.
- State Road 337 East: Reported as flooded at this hour.
Residents in Lawrence County should be prepared for deteriorating conditions on rural and low-lying roads. Emergency officials are urging extreme caution during the morning commute, as many county roads may have standing water that is difficult to gauge in depth.
“Turn Around, Don’t Drown”
Public safety officials emphasize that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Drivers are reminded to:
- Avoid all flooded areas: Never attempt to drive through water-covered roadways.
- Exercise caution: Be especially mindful of road stability near creeks and streams.
- Follow the rule: “Turn around, don’t drown.”
Updates on road conditions and the ongoing flood status will be provided as they become available.
