Banneker Community Center launches new community-wide donation program

BLOOMINGTON The Banneker Community Center is making it easier for residents to give back with the launch of a new, centralized drop-off donation initiative this month.

The center has introduced dedicated donation boxes designed to collect a wide array of items, which will then be sorted and redistributed to various Bloomington organizations. The goal of the program is to streamline the donation process, ensuring that local resources reach the community members and non-profits that need them most.

While the Banneker Center is accepting “items of all kinds,” organizers have identified several high-priority needs based on current community demand. Residents are encouraged to donate:

  • Apparel & Linens: Gently used clothes, shoes, blankets, and towels.
  • Personal Care: Unused toiletries (soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.).
  • Pet Supplies: Pet toys and unopened pet food.

Once items are placed in the drop-off boxes, a dedicated team of volunteers manages the logistics. These volunteers assess the donations and coordinate with a network of local organizations to ensure that, for example, pet supplies go to local shelters and professional attire reaches job-placement programs.

By acting as a central hub, the Banneker Community Center aims to bridge the gap between residents who have items to give and the organizations that are working on the front lines every day.

The City of Bloomington is asking for the public’s assistance in spreading the word about this new resource. Whether you are spring cleaning or simply want to support your neighbors, your contributions help sustain the diverse network of support services throughout the city.
