The Lawrence County Coalition Against Domestic Violence launches 2025 Purple Pumpkin Project for domestic violence awareness

BEDFORD – The Lawrence County Coalition Against Domestic Violence will once again turn the community purple this October with the annual Purple Pumpkin Project, a month-long initiative to raise awareness and show support for survivors of domestic violence.

This year’s campaign, running from October 1–31, will feature decorated wooden pumpkin cutouts instead of real pumpkins. The symbolic displays can be hung or placed on stands provided by the coalition, making them easy to showcase in homes, storefronts, and other highly visible locations.

“This is our second year bringing Purple Pumpkins to Lawrence County, with the goal of raising awareness about domestic violence in our community. The color purple has been associated with Domestic Violence for many years and of course pumpkins are a symbol of October which is Domestic Violence Awareness month. We hope in October when you spot a purple pumpkin at your vet’s office, your hairstylist’s chair, your morning gas station stop, or even your best friend’s front porch, it sends a clear message: our community does not stand for domestic violence, and we stand with survivors,” shared Amber Richards, Vice President of the Lawrence County Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Each pumpkin will include an informational card explaining its meaning and providing resources for those affected by domestic violence. Delivery for businesses and individuals in the Bedford and Mitchell areas will take place from September 25 to 30.

Community members can sponsor pumpkins for $10 each or choose to display one sponsored by another donor. Additional opportunities include helping decorate or deliver pumpkins or contributing funds for materials.

The coalition hopes the effort will fill the county with a visible sign of hope and solidarity throughout Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
