Earth Hour promotes energy conservation, Bloomington offers Earth Day rain barrels and compost bins

BLOOMINGTON Earth Hour approaches on March 22nd, with lights out from 8 to 9 p.m. The Waste Reduction District and the City of Bloomington are partnering to promote sustainable practices through a pre-order sale of rain barrels and compost bins for Earth Day.

Recognizing the growing national trend of utilizing these tools for climate change mitigation, the District and City offer pre-order items at wastereductiondistrictorders.com, with pickup on April 25th and 26th and May 3rd at the South Walnut Recycling Center. The order deadline is April 15th, with no shipping costs.

“Adopting these two basic stewardship practices…opens people’s eyes as to the immense impact they can make,” says Elisa Pokral, Community Outreach Coordinator, highlighting the benefits of reducing waste, conserving water, and creating valuable soil. Rain barrels can reduce utility bills by up to 40%.

Shawn Miya, Assistant Director of Sustainability, emphasizes the universal benefits of rainwater collection and composting, which reduce stormwater runoff and provide free soil.

The initiative encourages residents to “make Earth Day every day.” As Tom McGlasson Jr., District Executive Director, notes, “The more people use rain barrels and compost bins, the healthier we will all be.”

Rain barrels ($79.95) and compost bins ($69.95) are available for pre-order at wastereductiondistrictorders.com. Pickup is scheduled for April 25th and 26th and May 3rd, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3400 South Walnut Street. For purchasing questions, contact 1-800-842-0527.
