INDIANA – The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Forestry is calling on all fifth graders in Indiana to participate in the 2024-2025 Arbor Day Poster Contest. Open to students statewide, including those enrolled in homeschool, the contest encourages creativity and environmental awareness through art. Submissions are due by April 1, 2024, and detailed contest rules and entry forms can be found on the DNR website.

This year’s theme, “Healthy Trees, Healthy Me!”, highlights the many health benefits trees provide, from their vital role in the ecosystem to the positive impact they have on human well-being. Whether through clean air, shade, or the calming environment they create, research shows that trees are integral to our physical and mental health.
Educators can align the contest with several Indiana State Fifth Grade Standards. These include:
- Science (5-LS1-1; 5-ESS3-1)
- Health & Wellness (3-5 1.3)
- Visual Arts (Anchor Standards 1-8)
The DNR encourages teachers to explore resources such as Project Learning Tree, The Arbor Day Foundation, The Morton Arboretum, Penn State K-5 Lesson Plans, and Tree-mendous Fruits Lesson Plan to assist in creating engaging lesson plans that tie into the contest.
The Arbor Day Poster Contest is a great opportunity for students to learn about the importance of trees while expressing their creativity. For any questions, participants are encouraged to reach out via email at urbanforestry@dnr.IN.gov.
Spread the word, and get your submissions in before the deadline!
