Monon South Trail expands with 2.4-mile section opening in Mitchell

MITCHELL – A significant milestone was reached on Friday afternoon with the opening of the second completed section of the Monon South Trail, adding 2.4 miles to the growing trail network.

The event was attended by several key figures, including Mitchell Mayor Don Caudell, Lawrence County Tourism Executive Director Tonya Chastain, Dale Brier from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Radius Indiana President and CEO Jeff Quyle.

Phase 1 of the Monon South Trail construction, which commenced in July 2024, aims to complete 20 miles of trail stretching from Mitchell to Borden. Following the successful opening of the Orleans section in December, this latest addition marks further progress on the ambitious project.

Funding for Phase 1 is being provided by the state’s Next Level Trails initiative, highlighting the commitment to enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities across Indiana. The DNR and the READI (Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative) program have supported the Monon South Trail, with the DNR contributing $22.3 million and the Indiana Uplands committing $1 million.

The DNR has demonstrated its strong support for trail development across the state, having awarded a total of $180 million through four rounds of funding.

The opening of this new section of the Monon South Trail is expected to significantly boost outdoor recreation in the region, offering residents and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the area while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
