Bedford Parks Department prepares for summer season

BEDFORD – The Bedford Parks Department Board discussed work preparation throughout the park system on Tuesday afternoon to prepare for the summer season.

A sinkhole at Otis Park Gold Course has been filled.

“It took three guys hauling dirt for two straight days to fill it,” they said Park Director Jimmy Jone. “There is a little more to do to shape it out.”

They have also extended the driving range and added target pods at 50, 75, 100, 150, and 200 yards.

“We also added one at 25 and 30 yards for those wanting to practice their chip shots,” added Jones.

Thanks to IMI for partnering with the Parks Department, there is now a new sandbox at Wilson Park.

All the parks also have new mulch.

The staff has been preparing the Garden Park on H Street community gardens. All have been spoken for, and those signing up are ready to begin planting.

“Activity has ramped up at the community gardens. The ground has been tilled. We have added two raised beds. We are considering adding more in a different area or on the opposite side. Those who have reserved a spot are ready to get planting,” added Jones.

Crews are working on the baseball fields for the upcoming season.

“We are working on getting the fields ready and back into shape for the upcoming season,” added Jones.

Work continues at the City Pool.

“We are doing a deep clean and have power-washed everything,” added Jones. “We are painting the pool and the bathhouse.”

The turnout for the solar eclipse on April 8th was less than expected.

“We had around 400 or more people watch from our city parks,” added Jones.

People from California, Utah, Wisconsin, Michigan, Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, and Tennessee attended.

“The attendance wasn’t what we expected, but it is better to be prepared than not be prepared,” added Jones. “I hate we closed the golf course, but it was safer than having $100,000 worth of damages to the greens. We just didn’t want to take that chance.”
