Cause of death released of Huntington County Jail inmate

HUNTINGTON CO. – At the request of the Huntington County Coroner, the Indiana State Police is releasing the Coroner’s Report associated with the death of 37-year-old Schakia Yates of Indianapolis.

The preliminary investigation has determined that Sunday morning at approximately 5:15 a.m., Huntington County Jail staff responded to a female inmate in medical distress.

Yates was being housed alone in a medical cell due to a history of medical issues.  Yates was unresponsive.  Jail staff provided medical aid and called for EMS personnel.  Upon their arrival, EMS personnel took over life-saving care but were not able to revive Yates. She was pronounced dead at the jail.

According to Huntington County Chief Deputy Coroner Philip S. Zahm, the results of the autopsy indicated the decedent experienced a medical issue, specifically, a bilateral pulmonary embolism that originated in the leg. Such events are seldom surviveable due to the blockage that occurs in the lungs.  The manner of death is ruled natural.
